Self Actualization: Realization Potential, Acceptance, Spirituality

Self Actualization is about having motivation to realize our capabilities and self-being. Realization Potential goes under this category because one has to have the ability to recognize one's own limitations and potentials. Acceptance is also needed, for one has to learn to accept oneself in spite of faults that they may possess. Spirituality is an element which I added on to this category because spirituality is about knowing one's place on this living earth and being part of it.

Esteem: Self- Esteem and Support

Esteem is about receiving respect from others and from oneself. Self-Esteem deals wit one's ability to respect oneself and have a healthy pride in oneself. Support is also needed from others so that an individual fees motivated and develops a sense of purpose.

Social: Friendship, Love, Acceptance, Support, Procreation, Communication

Social is about having a sense of belonging and acceptance. By being a part of a group/organization/society and etc, one gains support and develops friendship and love. Procreation arises from love and is about trust and being a part of each other. Communication is an element which I added and is important because it is a method which is always used in developing social relationship.

Safety: Shelter, Money, Car

Safety is about feeling safe and secured in this world. Shelter provides an individual with a space where one feels comfortable in such as one's own abode. Money allows one to purchase goods that attribute to one's increased safety needs. Cars allow one to travel from one point to another and also gives them a sense of control over who gets to ride it or not.

Physiological: Food, Water, Air, Sunlight, Procreation, Heat, Sleep

Food provides one with nutrition and a source of energy. Hydration is something that is essential in our lives and water gives such necessity. Air allows us to breathe which we can not live without, Procreation is what allows human beings to exist over time, Heat is something that we need in our body to adapt to different surroundings and Sleep is something that I added because without sleep, we can not function and the brain in return does not perform its role at its maximum ability.

Altruism

  1. Are we, as some might say, motivated by a desire to save our off-spring?
We are motivated by a desire to save our off-spring because it is in our nature to protect the ones we feel a part of. Hamilton's theory of Kin Selection tells us that if an individual sees another individual as a set of genes rather than separated organism, we feel "one" with the other person (the level depends on the proximity of relationship between the individuals). Personally, I believe that "saving off-spring" is one of our strongest motivations because we value kinship and is respected in any society.
  2. Must there always be some sort of intrinsic reward for doing good? I believe that there should be some sort of intrinsic reward for doing good because for our actions, we automatically develop the anticipation for some reward. The reward does not even have to be materialistic, for as the website states, the "high" feeling that we receive when doing something good provides us with the satisfaction that we desire. It is this satisfaction that drives us to do good.
  3. Mr. Otis once said, "That having integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching." If this is so, and no one knows when we have done good, would you still do good? Honestly, I think that in every individual there is a desire for some kind of reward for one's actions. That reward, as stated above, does not have to be materialistic. It can simply be the feeling that you receive that motivates you to pursue beneficial actions. Personally, I would attempt to continue doing good things; however, the level of motivation would not be as high as it would be if my actions were being noticed by other people. This does not mean that I will stop doing good things, but it wouldn't be as rewarding and satisfactory, for many individuals do seek for something in return.
  4. "Delayed reciprocal altruism", seems like a gamble - back to game theory, any way. Does this seem to make sense to you. That is that we act out of a desire to have what we have done being done to us? We do attempt to act in a way that we want others to behave toward us; however, it is a gamble, for it does not guarantee such reward. It does make sense in a way that no matter how benevolent or selfless an individual is, there is always a need to fulfill our own desire for satisfaction. Hence, we are motivated to do good for others in hopes of receiving the same type of action done on to us.
  5. Are we ever being truly "selfless" when committing an act of altruism? Unfortunately, I do not believe that we are truly "selfless" when committing an act of altruism because as stated above, what motivates us to perform such action is to receive some sort of reward in order to fulfill personal need for satisfaction. For example, why do many celebrities travel to African countries? Don't get me wrong, it is nice of them to help out those in need; however, they are not only motivated by the goodness in their hearts, but also by the attention they will receive on media - which helps them maintain their "clean" image.

What seems to be the major motivating factor(s) for people that are affected by an eating disorder?

The major motivating factor for people that are affected by an eating disorder is media. Media is designed to attract wide variety of audiences, which of course means that it certainly has a large impact on the society. For example, in Korea, there are many entertainment shows which gather many popular singers, actors, models and comedians and have them show their talent and skills. Whenever a tall, slim women or tall, buff men come up, they always end up receiving positive reactions from the crowd. These "idealistic" men and women would be labeled as "a perfection". This in turn, affects many viewers, for they also start to perceive the idea that in order to be perfect and loved, you need to look like the people on television, ads, magazines, newspapers and etc. Media is created to persuade people to think in way that the company wants them to think, hence, it leads large groups of people to develop a false idea that you need to have certain type of body in order to obtain happiness.

What might be the social/political implications for there being a gay gene?

Some implications for there being a gay gene is that it could promote the idea that gayness is a defect and is in need of fixing. If they discover that gayness has to do with the hormones or genes, many will attempt to find a "cure" that will fix the "problem". On the other hand, it could protect the gay community by stating the fact that there should be a new law acting against gay discrimination just like racial discrimination. One's sexual orientation is a very complex concept and many people believe in different things that there is actually no way that we can predict what will happen if it is proven that there is a gay gene.
